There was an energy in the air this past Sunday morning as we stood in line to vote. As a resident (with American citizenship), I am not eligible to vote. However, I didn't let that stop me from going along with my husband to participate as a spectator. People from our town gathered, the young and old, at our local middle school where they patiently waited to cast their vote for our new Prime Minister. Though Italy is famous for bureaucratic red tape, I had to admire how quick the election had been organised; it was just January when our government fell and just a few short months later it was election time. Nice to see Italy not dragging the election out like SOME countries (you know who you are).We had all gone with hope in our hearts, but knowing very well that there was a good chance that our ex Prime Minister would collect enough votes to regain power. It was no surprise when we turned on the morning news to hear confirmation of what we had all expected and dredded. Berlusconi is back.
How fitting it is that the news of Sivilo's reelection would come on this, the 96Th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. Though most of the world can agree with me that Berlusconi's return as Italy's Prime Minster isn't as tragic as the loss of the Titanic....
